Tools to Engage Everyone in Problem Solving

Session focus: 

daily problem solving, visual communication

Using Daily Management Boards, Problem Solving Tool, the Improvement Inventory eForm, and videos of staff to engage everyone in problem solving at the workgroup, small group and individual level everyday, all-day long. Also demonstrated is an approach for capturing these improvements that can be shared with others to reinforce a culture of problem-solvers and makes tracking the improvement results easier for the department/agency.

Karl Kraber

Karl Kraber joined the Employment Security Department (ESD) in March 2015 after more than 25 years of process improvement experience in manufacturing, government, and health care. He received a Master’s degree in both Public Administration through Ball State University in Indiana and in Applied Behavioral Sciences. Karl has implemented Lean at The Boeing Company, University of Washington and Franciscan Health System and hopes to replicate his success here. His main objective is to create an environment of thinking and learning so that everyone can make a difference in the lives of others and in their own lives. Karl likes to travel, is an avid sailor, gardener, home remodeler and singer. Karl believes in the dignity of work and brings passion and drive to ESD in spreading the power of Lean and employee engagement to make work meaningful and productive for everyone.

Anna St.Martin
Lean Leader, Office of Lean Transformation
Employment Security Department

Anna St. Martin joined the Employment Security Department (ESD) in September 2016, after more than 13 years with the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT), where she was a founding member of the WSDOT Lean Office for the prior 2+ years. Anna earned Master’s degrees in Civil Engineering and Leadership & Organizational Development. Anna blends her strong background in data analytics and organizational change to support teams in their efforts to improve processes while effectively managing the people side of change. Seeing people engaged with their work and empowered to make things better is what Anna loves most about this work. Anna also loves to grow vegetables, and dehydrates or cans the produce to enjoy throughout the year. Anna and her husband love to dance, travel whenever they can, and are currently remodeling their 1919 home.
