Archived: Annual attainment of certificates, credentials, apprenticeships and degrees

Increasing educational attainment is vital to the well-being of Washingtonians and critical to the health of the state’s economy. A well-educated population generates more tax revenue and requires fewer social services. Education opens doors to gainful employment, higher wages, increased job benefits, improved physical health, and increased civic engagement. Educated workers capable of competing for high-demand jobs in today’s global economy sustain existing employers and attract new businesses—directly contributing to the state’s economic growth and vitality.

Degree and certificate awards have been increasing. There were over 72, 000 certificates, apprenticeships, and degrees awarded in 2014 compared to less than 57,000 in 2007.

The Roadmap from the Washington Student Achievement Council lays out 12 strategies to increase participation and success in postsecondary education. The key strategies that directly support increased success include:

• Streamline and expand dual credit and dual enrollment programs.
• Increase support for all current and prospective students.
• Provide greater access to work-based learning opportunities.
• Leverage technology to improve student outcomes.
• Ensure cost is not a barrier for low-income students.
• Make college affordable.
