Why is this a priority?

Additional jobs in the state will provide opportunities for the unemployed or underemployed job seekers in the state. Greater levels of employment will increase consumer spending, with broader economic benefits across our state.

Background

While the private sector creates the large majority of jobs in the state, state government has the capacity to encourage additional job creation, using its taxing, regulatory and spending authorityand through the ability to convene public and private sector parties to join together to take joint action.

Current conditions

At the end of calendar year 2015, total non-farm employment in the state was 3.145 million. Currently, the number of jobs gained thru October 2016 are 131,170 or 53.2 percent of the 2020 goal.
